As much as we would like to talk about Vietnam and Halong Bay all day long, here at Halong Hub we get emails all the time asking us for travel tips. One of the most common questions is on Singapore. Hence we thought we should write a series on the Sunny Island and share them with everyone on our Wix site. Hope you like this series.

Singapore is an island, located on the southern part of Malaysia. From 1819, it served as a trading port for British ships on their strategy to India. As a major trading hub and for its proximity to its neighbor Malaysia, Singapore used to be proned to many international influences, from Britain and from different Asian nations. Chinese language and Indian workers moved to Singapore to work at the harbor. Singapore has different ethnic groups and languages. They got people speaking many languages; Chinese, Indian, Malay, Indonesian, Peranakan and French here in Singapore.

Singapore Language

In Singapore - English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil are the four legitimate languages spoken there and the country most accepted language is Chinese. The national anthem is written in the Malay language, although Malay was the official language in the past, many of the young find it difficult speak it. The younger generation uses English to communicate with people around them. Singapore children are taught English as their first language and their mother tongue as their second language in schools; hence most of the Singaporeans are bilingual. Because of the publicity of unique languages in Singapore most of the Singaporean spoke a couple of language- it's known as Singlish. Singlish is a blend of Malay, English and Chinese language. Most Singaporean uses Singlish to communicate with each other especially the older/advanced ones, because English was not taught at that time.
